When traveling, especially internationally or long distances, many people prefer to fly. It is a safe, convenient, and relatively fast way to get to your destination. But sometimes flying can feel like it takes forever, especially when traveling abroad or overseas where flights tend to last eight hours or more. Wear comfortable clothing
When you’re traveling on a long-haul flight, you tend to spend a lot of time sitting in your seat. Try and wear comfortable clothing that is loose and does not rub too much on your skin. Avoid formal wear and try to go for a comfortable tracksuit and sneakers. Comfy clothes make it easier to relax and even catch a bit of sleep, which will help pass the time. If you need to be dressed formally when you land, for example, if you have to attend a business meeting straight away, you can always pack your suit in your carry-on and change into it about an hour before you land.
Reserve a good seat
When booking your flight, some airlines allow you to reserve your seat. Try and choose a seat that works for you. If you want a lot of legroom, reserve a seat at the emergency exit row. If you want to sleep, maybe try and book a window seat so you can rest your head against the wall. If you know that you are a very active person when flying, or you may need the restroom a lot, choose an aisle seat so you can move up and down without disturbing others.
Hydration is key
The cabin environment is carefully controlled, however, one of the effects of the high altitude and pressurization is that you may begin to feel a little dehydrated. It is important to drink lots of water as this prevents dry skin and helps with other irritations such as an itchy nose and dry eyes. If you are prone to dry eyes, make sure that you use hydrating eye drops. You can also combat dry skin with moisturizer or lotion.
Move around the cabin
Sitting for a long period of time can make you feel cramped and uncomfortable, especially if you are finding it hard to sleep. Move around the cabin frequently and stretch your legs, even if it’s just to go to the restroom or get a cup of coffee from the galley. Not only will it pass the time, but can also help prevent sore joints and muscles. Moving also gets the blood flowing and can make sure that you feel more relaxed when you land. Many onboard airline magazines or onboard entertainment systems offer guides on different exercises and stretches you can do if you start feeling cramped, so make use of those.
While most airlines do provide a small pillow and blanket for long flights, if you can, it is best to bring your own travel pillow with you as this allows you to rest your head properly without hurting your neck. An eye mask, earplugs or noise-canceling headphones can also be great as they block out any disturbances surrounding you, and can help you rest. If you prefer not to sleep, maybe download some good movies or games onto your cell phone or tablet that you can use to keep you entertained.
