Sometimes as an actor you don’t get to choose who you are starring opposite. Instead of being a pro and doing their jobs, these actors simply refused to share a kiss with their co-stars, despite it being in the script.
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
Sometimes co-stars don’t get along, which makes filming a movie next to impossible. That was the case for Julie Roberts and Nick Nolte when shooting the romantic comedy ‘I Love Trouble.’ Roberts reportedly thought Nolte was “completely disgusting” and seemed to be deliberately trying to make enemies.
Nolte wasn’t exactly complimentary of Robert either, and the co-stars reportedly refused to shoot scenes together. That made it pretty difficult to persuade them to eventually agree to doing their kissing scene, while the lack of chemistry was noticeable in the final cut.
Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco
After spending her career on The Disney Channel, Vanessa Hudgens was looking to find a more adult role to help her break out from the mold. She got what she was looking for in the crime drama ‘Spring Breakers.’
When it came to doing some kissing and intimate scenes with James Franco, however, Hudgens wasn’t too keen. She said it turned out so badly that she instructed her agent to never get her a role like that again, saying she’d rather kiss a girl than Franco again.
Priyanka Chopra and Annu Kapoor
Priyanka Chopra had some trouble with a co-star before she became a household name in Hollywood. She was filming ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ and had seven husbands in the film. One of those husbands was Annu Kapoor, who is 26 years older the Chopra.
Reports claim that the younger actress refused to shoot any kissing scenes with Kapoor because of the age difference. Reports also claimed that the pair really didn’t get along, and it was more than the age gap that drove a wedge between the stars.
Leona Lewis and Chace Crawford
One of the positives of being a music star is shooting the video and being surrounded by the beautiful people while you do it. Leona Lewis was shooting her video for ‘I Will Be,’ and it meant she got to cozy up to ‘Gossip Girl’ hunk Chace Crawford.
Despite it being a part of the video for Lewis to kiss Crawford, she refused it. Lewis worried that it would make her boyfriend jealous, so she refrained from locking lips with the actor.
Luke Grimes and Nelsan Ellis
The steamy vampire series ‘True Blood’ got pulses racing all over the world as there were a ton of intimate scenes between most of the cast members. Luke Grimes was one of the stars of the show, but elected to walk away from the big payday once he discovered his character would be doing an all-male love scene.
Grimes’ character was due to get in a relationship with Nelsan Ellis’ character, but that’s not how the actor told the story. He claimed it was because of conflicting acting schedules.
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder became a real-life couple while filming the supernatural drama ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ During the course of the show they eventually broke up, but their characters remained close.
That posed a problem, but the actors found their own solution. They had remained friends following the end of their relationship and agreed not to do any more kissing scenes together. The character stopped being so intimate and only had one more kiss, in the show’s finale.
Sean Young and Harrison Ford
Futuristic dystopian movie ‘Blade Runner’ relied on the relationship between Harrison Ford and Sean Young’s characters to be believable. While audiences might have been fooled into thinking the pair were a great match for each other, on set, they really didn’t get along.
Young reportedly had a huge distaste for Ford’s facial hair, which irritated her skin. The couple could not get along, and the cast dubbed their love-making effort, ‘The Hate Scene,’ because of the animosity they had for each other.
Emma Watson and Rupert Grint
Emma Watson and Rupert Grint had known each other since they were pre-teens, so when it came to shooting romantic scenes together, they struggled. Grint was reportedly so against the idea of kissing Watson because he felt as though they were like brother and sister.
In fact, the Harry Potter star admits that he can’t look back at those scenes and avoids them at all costs. Despite not wanting to, the pair nailed it on one take, possibly because they knew they wouldn’t be filming another.
Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt
Pakistani actor Fawad Khan had vowed to preserve his chastity, which brought some complications on the set of Bollywood movie ‘Kapoor and Sons.’ Khan was slated to kiss his co-star Alia Bhatt, but he refrained, citing his chastity as the reason.
A compromise was made, and the actors agreed to create a ‘cheat kiss,’ where it would only look like they were smooching. Even though they had this agreement in place, Bhatt admitted that Khan would flinch every time she moved her face toward his.
Sunny Leone and everyone
Bollywood actress Sunny Leone has done plenty of kissing scenes in the past, but since 2014 they are off the table for her. She installed a new clause in her film contracts that prohibit her from being directed to kiss anyone.
That hasn’t stopped her from getting intimate in her films, but for some personal reason to her that she hasn’t disclosed, she refuses to kiss anyone. She might continue to portray these romantic roles, but you won’t be seeing her locking lips with anyone.
Candace Cameron and her co-stars
Candace Cameron has admitted that she struggles to do kissing scenes in any of her movies. She says the older she gets, the harder it becomes to feign intimacy with her fellow actors, and instead, she only wants to kiss her husband.
Cameron is a devout Christian and tries to keep the intimate scenes to a minimum in her films. She admitted that because he might see her kissing another man, Cameron’s husband refrains from watching any of her movies, which she says she “totally understands.”
Thandie Newton and Gerard Butler
Illness can strike any of us at the worst possible time, and that’s what happened on the set of the drama ‘RocknRolla’ for Gerard Butler. He was penned to kiss his co-star Thandie Newton, but she refused to go anywhere near the Scottish actor.
Her reason was pretty justifiable though, because Butler had a cold and was extremely unwell. Newton didn’t want to risk infection and demanded that director Guy Ritchie find a solution. The director worked around Butler’s cold and Newton didn’t have to kiss the actor.
Tisha Campbell and Martin Lawrence
In the classic sitcom ‘Martin,’ one of the highlights of the show was the relationship between Tisha Campbell and Martin Lawrence. Eventually that turned sour, and by season five, Campbell was refusing to do kissing scenes with Lawrence.
In fact, she had grown tired of the actor’s alleged inappropriate advances toward her that she barely wanted to be in the same room. This led to a breakdown behind the scenes, and ultimately the show was canceled after things were unfixable between the stars.
Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif
The acting business is a strange one because you never know who you’re going to be cast alongside. Many actors find love on the set of a film, and that was the case for Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
The only problem was their love had fizzled out by the time they were cast together in ‘Jagga Jasoos.’ The pair were working together, and Kapoor reportedly refused to kiss Kaif in their movie, making for an awkward atmosphere backstage.
Sadie Sink and Caleb McLaughlin
Sadie Sink inadvertently inspired her first-ever on-screen kiss with Caleb McLaughlin. She was reportedly so hesitant for the kiss to happen that the shows creator decided it would actually be great to make that happen.
They were both 15 at the time and understandably nervous. It was kept a surprise from Sink until the day they were shooting the kiss, when one of the showrunners asked her if she was ready for it. Sink said she wasn’t forced into the kiss, but it just stressed her out initially.
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley appeared to have good chemistry when they starred opposite each other in comedy-drama ‘The Spectacular Now.’ By in large they did, but there was one thing about Woodley that Teller seemed to struggle with.
Woodley was known to be on an interesting diet that consisted of eating clay and other strange foods. Teller claimed this made Woodley’s breath smell terrible, and kissing scenes with her were a real problem for the ‘Whiplash’ star.
Sienna Miller and James Franco
Sienna Miller and James Franco were cast opposite each other in the fantasy comedy ‘Camille’ as newlyweds. Most newlyweds are all over each other, but there is a distinct lack of intimacy in this film.
It’s not because Miller and Franco didn’t get along, but more to do with what was happening in Miller’s mouth. She was having teeth problems, and that meant kissing was a no-go. Miller even had an emergency dentist come to the set to try and get her through the pain.
Neal McDonough and Virginia Madsen
Neal McDonough stuck to his principles so strongly that it cost him his job on the set of the comedy series, ‘Scoundrels.’ McDonough vowed not to kiss his co-star Virginia Madsen because he would only kiss his wife as per his religious beliefs.
Eventually, McDonough was fired and replaced by David James Elliot, but the actor has no regrets. His devotion to his god was all that he needed from life anyway, and he was happy to not put himself in a position that compromised his beliefs.
Kirsten Dunst and Brad Pitt
When Kirsten Dunst was cast to star opposite Brad Pitt in ‘Interview with the Vampire’ at the age of 11, it must have been a dream come true. Dunst’s character kissed Brad Pitt in one scene, which actually ended up being the actress’s first-ever kiss.
She thought it was awful and “disgusting,” before admitting that she waited many years after that to kiss anyone else. Dunst was very young at the time, and it’s totally understandable why she was grossed out by kissing a fully grown man.
Jewel and Rob Lowe
Rob Lowe has been breaking hearts for many years, but it was his heart that was broken during the filming of the drama series ‘The Lyon’s Den.’ He specifically asked for Jewel to be cast as his love interest, but when she got to the set, she wasn’t comfortable shooting intimate scenes with Lowe.
Jewel reportedly claimed she didn’t know where Lowe’s mouth had been and didn’t want to kiss him. She even went to the trouble of bringing her then-boyfriend to the set to prevent it from happening.
Samuel L. Jackson and anyone
When Samuel L. Jackson was cast in the 2016 sci-fi drama ‘The Cell,’ he didn’t fully comprehend the script. Jackson didn’t realize his character was a member of the LGBTQ community, and once it dawned on him, he had some thoughts.
The legendary actor refused to kiss any man on the set, a promise he once made in ‘Playboy’ magazine many years ago. He stuck to his word, and there were no kissing scenes for Jackson on the set of ‘The Cell.’
Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea
Kirk Cameron is another actor who sticks to their principles in life and doesn’t waver from them even on the set of a movie. He was cast in the drama ‘Fireproof’ and had to find a creative solution to kissing his co-star, Erin Bethea.
Cameron does not want to kiss any woman other than his wife, Chelsea Noble, so that’s what he did in the film. Noble came to the set and put on Bethea’s character’s clothes and kissed her husband while disguised as his co-star.
Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel
If you have watched the sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ you will probably recall plenty of times when Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segal locked lips. Eventually Hannigan was on board with kissing Segal, but not before he quit his smoking habit.
In the early series she refused to kiss Segal because she didn’t want to feel as though she was licking an ashtray. Segal initially paid a self-imposed fine of $10 every time hit lit up, and that hurt his pockets so much he eventually quit smoking.
Tiger Shroff and everybody
Actor Tiger Shroff reportedly has a no-kiss clause in all of his movie contracts. The action star believes that on-screen kisses go against Indian culture, and it’s not something he is willing to partake in.
Tiger has become so meticulous in his contract negotiations that they line up with his other loves, his fitness regime, and personal ethics. The actor’s father, Jackie Shroff, is known for being a wild card, but his son appears to be going in the opposite direction by sticking on the straight and narrow.
Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s characters on the sitcom ‘Modern Family’ are known as one of TV’s best couples. However, during the filming of the first season, straight actor Eric Stonestreet was not comfortable with kissing his male co-star.
Eventually Stonestreet was able to get on board with kissing Ferguson, and the on-screen couple could finally act like one. Modern Family earned plenty of praise for showing an LGBTQ couple on primetime, and that is partially helped by Stonestreet overcoming his initial worries.
Janet Jackson and Tupac
When he was alive, Tupac was one of the most in-demand stars of the 1990s. He was cast alongside Janet Jackson in the 1995 romance drama ‘Poetic Justice.’ Jackson was hesitant to do any kissing scenes with the rapper because she had heard of his reputation as a ladies man.
In fact, Jackson even insisted Tupac got a medical examination before locking lips with her. Once Tupac discovered this, it was actually he who refused to do scenes with Jackson due to the insult.
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett
When Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were cast alongside each other in the drama ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,’ it was a recipe for success. These two incredibly glamorous co-stars would make the perfect on-screen couple, except for the part where Brad Pitt refused to kiss Blanchett.
He initially refused to kiss Blanchett because he didn’t want his then-wife Angelina Jolie to get jealous. Eventually, Pitt was convinced to do the kissing scene, and he didn’t end up staying married to Jolie anyway.
Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts
When Julia Roberts was cast alongside Denzel Washington in the drama ‘The Pelican Brief’ it seemed as though Hollywood was going to get an attractive pairing. Washington wasn’t all that thrilled about Roberts being cast as his co-star, particularly when it came to kissing scenes.
He had no interest in kissing Roberts because he was concerned about how it would be perceived in the African-American community. Roberts wasn’t very pleased by Washington’s decision to remove all the kissing scenes but stayed on to complete the film.
Herizen F. Guardiola and Justice Smith
When she was cast on musical drama series ‘The Get Down,’ it seemed as though Herizen F. Guardiola should have been on top of the world. She was introduced to her co-star Justice Smith and almost immediately asked to kiss him.
The pair were reading their lines when Baz Luhrman decided it wasn’t working. He got them to put down their scripts and hold hands. When that wasn’t working, either Lurhman directed the stars to kiss each other, but Guardiola was unwilling to because she had just met Smith.
Justin Bieber and backup dancer
Justin Bieber has largely been a pop music sensation, but in 2016 it was thought he was going to make the transition into acting. He was reportedly cast for a comedy TV series titled ‘Uber Girl’ but never stepped foot on set.
The singer was allegedly refusing to sign on for the show unless an intimate scene with a male backing dancer was written out. Not only that, but he was also unhappy at the request for him to even kiss the backing dancer.
Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen had earned a reputation as a party animal, but so had Lindsay Lohan. You have to wonder what kind of stories were circulating around the stars of Hollywood when Lohan was put off kissing Sheen because of his antics.
When they were cast in the horror-comedy ‘Scary Movie 5,’ Lohan was due to kiss Sheen, but a workaround was thought of. It wasn’t actually the ‘Mean Girls’ actress kissing Sheen, it was a body double as Lohan watched on from the wings.
Pat Boone and Shirley Jones
Pat Boone was unsure about kissing Shirley Jones in the musical drama ‘April Love’ because he didn’t have permission from his wife. When he read the script there were no kissing scenes, so Boone accepted the role.
The director then decided to go off-script and asked Boone to kiss Jones. The actor said he wouldn’t do it until he spoke with his wife. He went home, and his wife gave him permission for that film and all future films.
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt
Jennifer Lawrence makes a lot of friends in Hollywood, which means she finds it super awkward when she has to kiss any of them. Lawrence was due to kiss her co-star, and good friend, Chris Pratt in the sci-fi drama ‘Passengers’ that she took to drinking.
The actress is good friends not only with Pratt, but his then-wife Anna Faris, so she felt bad kissing a married man. Lawrence was so wracked with guilt over the scene she called her mom to hear someone tell her it was okay.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio
You might have thought that after filming the epic disaster movie ‘Titanic’ together, that Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio would be fine shooting more romantic scenes later in life. When the stars were cast alongside each other once again in 2008 romance drama ‘Revolutionary Road,’ they wanted to avoid the romantic aspect.
Winslet’s husband at the time, Sam Mendes, was the director, but mostly Kate and Leo didn’t want anything being compared to Titanic. That meant no romance was on the cards for these actors.
Kimberly McCullough and an older co-star
Just because something is for a TV show or movie doesn’t mean the people involved in that scene should be treated badly. Kimberly McCullough was only 14 years old she was asked to kiss a much older actor on the set of medical drama ‘General Hospital.’
The guy was 22, and his age was kept a secret from McCullough until the day of the scene. Her director ordered her to do it, but she said no, and eventually both parties settled for a peck on the cheek.
Will Smith and another man
Although Will Smith is a huge movie star today, he had to work his way up to the top billing. He appeared in the comedy-drama ‘Six Degrees of Separation,’ portraying a con artist who was a member of the LGBTQ community.
Smith was slated to do a kissing scene with another man in the film, but the up-and-coming star refused. He even went to fellow actor Denzel Washington for advice, who agreed with Smith. The director was reportedly unhappy, but compromised and shot a fake kiss scene instead.
Kevin Hart and other men
Kevin Hart has become a comedy sensation over the past few years, and we even got to see him smooching The Rock in ‘Central Intelligence.’ While he kissed The Rock, it seems that was a one-off for Hart, who turned down the role of Alpa Chino, in the comedy ‘Tropic Thunder.’
Hart doesn’t believe he could convincingly portray a member of the LGBTQ community as he wouldn’t be comfortable throwing himself into the role 100%.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
Some actors hit it off on set and become friends for life, while others declare war against each other and avoid their co-star like the plague. Ryan Gosling couldn’t foresee the end of the romance drama ‘The Notebook’ with Rachel McAdams, and reportedly did his best to get her fired.
He not only didn’t want to kiss her, he didn’t want to be in the same room as her. Gosling didn’t get his way, and the love-hate relationship between the pair seemingly made their on-screen love more believable.
Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson
Most people in Reece Witherspoon’s position when filming for ‘Water for Elephants’ would have been excited by the prospect of kissing heartthrob Rober Pattinson. Witherspoon might have had that initial excitement when she learned who she would be starring against, but when it came to filming, it was a different story.
The actress refused to do her kissing scenes with Pattinson for a while because he was suffering from a horrendous cold. She claimed he was actually green and infectious, so had no desire to be a part of that.
Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence has become one of the biggest film stars in the world, and that’s largely down to her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games.’ When Liam Hemsworth was due to shoot kissing scenes with Lawrence, she would make it as hard as possible for him.
Lawrence would go out of her way to make her breath smelly by eating garlic or fish to gross him out. The pair are good friends, and it sounds like this was Lawrence’s way of getting through the kissing scenes.
